Home Management of Minor illness

Many minor illnesses and conditions can be treated at home with over the counter medications and self-care

What to keep at home 

  • Pain relievers: Paracetamol or ibuprofen can help with headaches, colds, sore throats, and fevers
  • Throat lozenges: Strepsils or Dequacaine can help with sore throats
  • Indigestion remedies: Milk of magnesia or Gaviscon can help with indigestion
  • Laxatives: Senokot or similar can help with constipation
  • Rehydration salts: Dioralyte or similar can help with dehydration
  • Antihistamines: Can help with mild allergies
  • First aid kit: Includes plasters, bandages, antiseptic cream, and a thermometer

What you can do 

  • Rest and drink plenty of fluids
  • Take paracetamol or ibuprofen for aches and fevers
  • Keep the room at a comfortable temperature with fresh air circulating
  • Sponge with cool or lukewarm water

When to seek further advice

  • If the person has a temperature of over 40°C or 104°F 
  • If there is a stiff neck, cramps, or vomiting 
  • If a child seems weak and listless or suffers a fit or convulsion
